I didn't think I was going to be on board with a story which featured a swinger-esque hero like Mateo Bailon. I was so wrong! Emily Snow really made him swoon-worthy and the perfectly flawed alpha hero! And Jamile "Jamie" Armstrong wasn't too shabby either!
I loved the push-and-pull feel of their relationship. It was interesting to see someone who was not used to pursuing a woman go all out. And Mateo did it so well. I understood where Jamie's fears of being with Mateo came from. Nothing he was offering met any of the things she was looking for in a guy, but those two gave off sparks when they were around one another.
And the story flowed so well, from the beginning to the end. I couldn't put it down. I had to know what was going to happen between them. I was even worried the book would end on a cliffhanger, and Emily Snow gives as good cliffhanger as she does book, so I was pretty tense for a little bit. I shouldn't have worried, because she managed to not just wrap everything up, but do it in a way that felt just right and appropriate for Mateo and Jamie's story. It answered not only my questions, but also cleared up any of Jamie's lingering doubts about Mateo Bailon and even how Mateo felt about Jamie.
Most of all, I loved being a part of their story. It really felt like I was an observer of everything that happened between them. I loved seeing Lucy and Jace from Friction. I really loved how this book was set concurrently with some of the events from Friction, but someone could pick up Distraction and not be lost with the brief mentions. I would love for Emily to write more about some of the characters mentioned in this book. I think Victoria would make a great heroine, and so would Sonora. I also want to mention another Easter Egg in the form a mention to the Devoured series that made me squeal. I can never get enough of Emily's stories. I'll be happy reading anything she writes!
I've been intrigued by Mateo Bailon ever since reading Friction. And I wanted to see how his story with Jamie/Jamila would play out. Because it's obvious that Jamie is the serious commitment type of girl and Mateo is the opposite, but he definitely wants to spend time with Jamie if she'll let him.
I loved how Jamie would rebuff Mateo's advances and tell him how he's overstepping the line. As if that would stop Mateo other than to tone it down. They had fantastic chemistry and how can Jamie resist when a guy makes seductive promises in Spanish? And even if Mateo wasn't looking for anything long term, I adored how he treated Jamie like she was the most important woman at the moment. Mateo's past is complicated, but it explains why he refuses to settle down. Yet after that revelation, I wanted nothing more for him than to be happy with the one person he wants, to see her as more than a distraction.
Break out the visqueen and the Clorox wipes…seriously. I’m sorry, but I just can’t get past thinking about how Mateo Bailon had to have had sex with women all over his sex party house. I can barely make myself touch public handrails, so sitting on or touching anything in his home would have to be a no go.
Jamie and Mateo are two people that are incredibly wrong for each other. Jamie has dreams of marriage, babies and security and Mateo wants women, recklessness and a distraction from life. It should all be so simple. And it could have been if both of them hadn’t been lying to themselves and each other. So, that they mesh so well together is unexpected.
Jamie was the most honest of the two. She told Mateo right up front what she wanted in her life and from any man she got involved with. Her only mistake was in believing that she could just have a bit of fun with Mateo and not let her feelings get involved. Unfortunately, anyone who knows her knows she’s just not wired that way.
Mateo on the other hand is just plain stubborn. He completely lived up to everyone’s expectations of him, both family and friends. The only thing I did not understand about him was that he’s obviously known for throwing kinky sex parties so I’m not sure why getting caught having one would have stopped his partaking in his favorite form of distraction before Jamie.
Snow does a really good job of slowly building the relationship between these two. It’s not all rainbows and declarations of love right off the bat so the feelings they develop come as a surprise to both of them. And, as we all know, sometimes surprises are not welcome or handled well. You really feel for both of them here and want them to find their HEA. My only complaint with the book is that the conclusion seemed to be wrapped up pretty quickly and I found myself wanting more of what happened after.
