Barbarian Prize A SciFi Alien Romance Ice Planet Barbarians Book 6 eBook Ruby Dixon

This volume is about a 3.5 for me. Not for any defect of writing style or ability by the author, whom I think does a wonderful job. I just can't say I "liked" the entire book or that I will ever read this one again and I've read the first book and a few of the others multiple times. The theme of Barbarian's Prize was not one that I responded well to. It's impossible to describe why without some spoilers. The heroine was the victim of a rape about a year and a half ago. Although the author handles it gently and doesn't go into graphic details of the rape, there are enough flashbacks and scene setups to let the reader know that it was most likely a gang rape situation by aliens and references were made that some unpleasant things were done to her mouth specifically. I don't know what other people think of when mention of her "mouth" is made with a rape but I'm picturing forced fellatio or creepy long alien tongues groping around in it so the entire thing in my head is awful. The hero in this story patiently waits until Tiffany comes to terms with being able to let a male touch her and it takes most of the book for that to happen. The plot moves slowly.

I appreciate the horror that any sexual victim must go through and that dealing with this in a story is commendable and probably helpful for some women. However, when I sit down with a glass of wine and an Ice Planet Barbarian book, something I used to consider in the humorous sci-fi erotic romance category, the theme of rape recovery isn't really one that I find alluring. No matter how patient the hero was, I couldn't help thinking how hard it would be in reality for any woman who WAS recovering from such an experience to find a man willing to do everything the barbarian hero does. It was depressing instead of hopeful in some parts. I read the blurb on this one but didn't want to skip an entry in the series. Since my favorite authors don't sell through kindle-unlimited and I pay for my downloads, I want to support Ruby Dixon by buying her books. I also want to be honest with my reviews and honestly, rape in any romance book is the opposite of sexy for me. The love story was endearing and the competition between Tiffany's suitors funny but I'm hoping that Josie's story has the old ice planet charm back. Is it also to much to ask that Ms. Dixon go back and tell the stories of some of the girls that resonated quickly and that we never heard much about? I hate to think the series is almost over. Surely she has some ideas to extend this serial since interest in it only seems to be growing.

Barbarian Prize A SciFi Alien Romance Ice Planet Barbarians Book 6 eBook Ruby Dixon Reviews

Love, Love this series! The first few were quite humorous and it quickly became a guilty pleasure. The last few have taken on a more series note but I still love the stories just as much. In Barbarian Prize, Tiffany is one of two human females left without a mate and several of the men are working hard to win her favor. This would be flattering to many but not Tiffany because she is quite frightened of men because she was raped by the little aliens on the cargo ship. Many don't know this happened to her and why she is being so picky. Salukh, watches and studies her and knows that the behavior by the other males isn't welcome. He knows in his heart that she is his mate so he is willing to be patient.

What works so well for me in this series that is not so different from others are the characters. The heroines are strong and flawed but very likable. The hero's are ever woman's dream - except of course they are aliens. They are big, handsome warriors that honor and strive to make their mates happy and are loyal to the end. Salukh was sweet and patient as he waited for Tiffany to heal from her trauma. He acted as I'm sure many women that have had the same unfortunate traumatic act in common would want their potential mate to act. I felt that her previous rape was dealt with in a up front and honest way. The author did not try to diminish it so the two can start having sex quicker. The rape was also not described in detail but just bits and pieces through Tiffany's nightmares.

When they finally did get together, the scenes are steamy hot and the romance was quite sweet. The physical aspect of their relationship doesn't happen immediately which allows for more emotion for the reader. I can't wait for the next one!!
This book centers around the relationship between beautiful, black Tiffany who was raised by her aunt on a farm in El Paso, TX and young, brawny Salukh, the biggest of the Sa-khui hunters, who has never had a mate to share his furs but keenly wants one. Ruby Dixon does a great job giving meaning to the various facets of the main characters' personalities (especially Tiffany's) that we've glimpsed in the previous books from this series.

We learn in the beginning of Barbarian's Prize that Tiffany was sexually assaulted by one of the orange skin guards on board the alien spaceship piloted by her abductors. Though it isn't described in as graphic detail as the rape of Dominique in book one, it is discussed throughout the book and would be far more difficult to separate from the rest of the story. For this reason, some readers may want to skip this book to avoid any triggering effects. The story touches on the psychological harm suffered by victims of rape. It focuses on the difficulty Tiffany has experiencing sex as an act of love after having it used as a weapon against her. Salukh's patient, loving care as well as his outrage upon discovering the abuse Tiffany suffered at the hands of her captors further proves that big, blue guys are the best.

As in the previous books in the series, Ruby Dixon does a fantastic job with the alternating-character, first person narrative. I never got confused about whose part I was reading. Throughout the story, Tiffany remains Tiffany and Salukh remains Salukh. We even hear a little bit from Josie, who's distinctly different from the rest. In fact, I'm really looking forward to reading about her next. I believe she'll be one of my favorite heroines in the series.
